Is the Off-route padded?
No. It is unpadded by design — that is what keeps it flat against your body instead of standing off it like a backpack. If you want to protect a camera inside it, drop a Point & Shoot pouch in.
What fits in it day to day?

How is a sling different from a fanny pack?

Is it waterproof?
Water-resistant, not waterproof. The PU-coated ripstop and PVC-coated lining handle rain and spray, but seams and zips are not sealed, so it is not submersible.
